You can play as Tails or Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog. Titles that couldn’t support different character configurations now do. The changes are mostly to be found in each game’s anniversary mode. Some of them you have to pay extra for, which is absolutely galling. I could go down the list of changes, but they don’t amount to a whole lot. Admittedly, there’s a lot more to Sonic Origins than just widescreen ports the upgrades are just very granular. For the record, Sonic Origins is a compilation of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. These items are likely available online, but they’re nice celebratory bonuses in the in-game museum.
Instead of earning extra lives through play in Anniversary Mode, you earn coins, which can be traded in the museum for cool digital collectibles like old illustrations, videos, music, and even snippets from the Sonic 30th Anniversary Symphony performance. Here, the aspect ratio natively fits widescreen monitors, Sonic can access the drop-dash move from Sonic Mania, and the limited lives system is removed.
You can play them in Classic Mode, with the original aspect ratio and limited lives system preserved, or you can play the preferred Anniversary Mode. Sonic Origins provides easy access to all four of these beloved titles with new, gorgeously animated, bookended cutscenes. Speeding through Chemical Plant Zone is just as fun today as it was on Genesis, and I couldn’t have stopped the smile that spread across my face if I tried when the opening scene of Sonic 3 played.
